- Social Security Numbers (SSNs): You’ll need the SSNs for yourself (and your partner, if you're filing jointly) and, crucially, for the child(ren) you intend to claim. These are unique taxpayer identification numbers.
- Proof of Relationship: While the SSN usually serves this purpose, in rare cases, you might need documentation to prove the child is yours. This could include birth certificates.
- Custody Agreements: If you are separated or divorced, a legally binding custody agreement is vital. This document clarifies physical custody arrangements and can be essential if there’s a dispute over who claims the child, or to support your claim as the custodial parent.
- IRS Form W-7 (Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number): If your child, or you, does not have a Social Security number but is otherwise eligible, you may need to apply for an ITIN. This form is used to obtain that number, which can then be used on your tax return.
Remember, the IRS Child Tax Credit documentation requirements are strict. Keep copies of everything.
